PRE ORDER JACKETS DUE OCTOBER 2025
The history isn't clear on why we dub this style of jacket a Cossack, but there are some indications. The term comes from a mixed bag- from the military influences of the large collar, which can be worn up or down, apparent on the jackets worn by the nomadic folk, the Cossack. It was in the 1930's that major advertisers started referencing this particular, hip length, boxy fitting jacket a Cossack, and the name has stuck. Perhaps the coolest guy to ever rock a Cossack style was Albert Einstein, famously seen touting a Levi's Menlo jacket. But, lots of other cool cats have rocked this vintage inspired style, and you can too, but to another degree with the Y'2 leather.
This iteration is made from Kakishibu tanned horsehide leather, with a body that is lined with a 100% cotton twill, a lightweight dark brown fabric that breathes well in warmer weather. With a natural appearance at first glance, the leather will grow and develop over time. Exposure to light, shadows, the breath of life will permit a totally unique patina which will be solely yours. The Kakishibu process is also sometimes referred to as “Taiyo-zome (sun-dye)” due to the fact that this particular leather reacts positively to the rays of photosynthesis love from the sun. Exposure will cause rapid darkening and enhanced timbre, a richness that will grow overtime to result in a deeper generous persimmon shade.
The speed at which this leather transforms makes it desirable, in that patina comes quickly, albeit the process of attaining this unique leather characteristic is not: the dyeing process takes an insane amount of meticulous detail that it is not widely encouraged to produce. The leather is also amazingly sensitive to scratches and scuffs. For the patina lovers, that’s simply a plus. For the producers, it requires tender care and love, with steady hands.
The dye itself is highly acidic which means it reacts immediately to oxygen exposure, so the tanning process itself has to go quick, under diligent conditions in order to remain consistent. But leave it to the Japanese to become masters of the craft, and to deliver time-and-time again a flaw-free product.
