The Classic Moc Toe dropped in 1952. And when we say it hasn’t changed much since then, we mean in the most respectful, nerdy way possible.
Originally designed for sportsmen, hunters, outdoorsmen, guys walking through wet brush at 5am with a thermos of coffee and a dog that listens better than their kids, thus earning the nickname “Irish Setter.” Why? That original russet leather looked exactly like the coat of the hunter’s best friend. Marketing genius? Maybe. Accident? Also maybe. Either way, it stuck and the design itself and inherent properties of the boot were totally intentional:
- 6-inch height to protect ankles in wooded terrain
- Traction Tred wedge sole to dampen noise while stalking game
- Cushion underfoot for long days in the field
- Puritan triple stitching
- Goodyear welt construction
- Built in Red Wing, Minnesota
By the time the 6-inch Classic Moc really took off, it wasn’t just a hunting boot anymore. It was a worker’s boot. Then it was a subculture boot. And in 2007, when Red Wing launched the Heritage line, it became what we now lovingly call a “lifestyle boot.”
This Sand Mohave Roughout leather comes from SB Foot Tannery, Red Wing’s own tannery. Which means they control the hides, the oiling, the finishing & the whole process. Roughout means the flesh side of the hide, the “hairy” side facing outward which has some pretty great advantages:
- It’s more abrasion resistant
- It hides scuffs better
- It’s heavily oiled and waxed, making it nearly waterproof
- It breaks in easier than a full-grain smooth leather
This is the kind of leather that looks better when you don’t baby it. It darkens, it picks up character, it becomes uniquely yours. Roughout has this deep, rich texture that feels rugged but refined, which is why it is as equally at home in the workshop as it is paired with a cuffed pair of raw selvedge jeans.
