Coldbreaker Vest

If you’ve spent any time looking at boutique clothing store rails or scrolling through Japanese style blogs lately, you’ve probably seen a specific type of vest.

It looks like a cloud made of raw, unspun sheep fleece, fitted with a heavy two-way zipper and finished with neat, contrasting bias tape. It looks equal parts "Polish mountain shepherd" and "Tokyo coffee shop regular."

That is Coldbreaker. And the way it arrived in your wardrobe is a masterclass in the weird, bizarre, and wonderful way modern clothing actually gets made.

Coldbreaker Marriage and Mill

Retail listings for Coldbreaker are notoriously confusing. Half the shops on the internet will tell you it's an Irish heritage label hailing from Dublin. The other half swear up and down it's an industrial Polish factory operation from the foothills of the Beskid mountains.

The punchline? They’re both right.

It started in 1999 in Bielsko-Biała, Poland. Alexandra and Roman—a young couple living near the Tatra mountain corridor—decided to celebrate their marriage not by registering for fine china, but by purchasing industrial knitting equipment. The goal was simple: take regional sheep farming traditions and turn them into natural, therapeutic bedding and heavy work vests that could survive a Central European winter. They named the factory ALWERO.

Meanwhile, over in Clondalkin, Dublin, a commercial outfit called Yoko Wool Products Ltd. saw what the Polish factory was making and realized something important. ALWERO had the raw manufacturing muscle and the local wool-processing secret sauce, but they lacked global distribution logistics. Yoko Wool stepped in to handle the wholesale, brand management, and trade routes. It’s an odd, brilliant partnership: Central European milling power meets Atlantic shipping trade logistics.

Coldbreaker Vest Construction

Coldbreaker offers the perfect balance of natural wool fibers, and polyester in a smart way. Let us explain!

Raw sheep’s wool is a miracle fiber. It’s naturally breathable, absorbs up to 30% of its weight in moisture vapor without feeling wet, and contains residual lanolin that naturally resists odor-causing bacteria.

The Outer Face: 100% pure virgin sheep’s wool (mulesing-free), tumbled and mechanically sheared.
The Structural Core: A lightweight, 100% polyester warp-knit scrim matrix embedded inside the backing. The interior synthetic mesh acts like a tiny steel rebar skeleton, holding the shape of the garment, absorbing lateral stress, and supporting heavy zipper tracks. Meanwhile, the exterior face exposes only natural wool to the elements and your body.

And if you’re worried about that itchy, prickly feeling reminiscent of a punishment sweater your grandmother knit in 1984? Coldbreaker bypasses that entirely. Prickle happens when rigid fiber ends exceed 30 microns in diameter and poke your skin's nerve receptors. Instead of dumping the wool into harsh chemical baths to soften it, ALWERO runs the knit pile through a mechanical rotary tumbler and tip-shearing process. It curls the cut fiber ends, taming the scratch while leaving the fiber structure intact.

Coldbreaker Japanese Revival

Japanese buyers have a legendary talent for unearthing obscure European industrial manufacturers, flying to the factory, and looking at basic workwear through a design lens. In the late 2010s, buyers from B:MING by BEAMS and Journal Standard discovered ALWERO’s factory catalog. They didn't want to change the wool fabric—the fabric was perfect. Instead, they asked for katabetchu (exclusive pattern special make-ups).

They took a thermal vest built for rural farm workers and turned it into an essential piece of urban layering gear. Once Japanese street style adopted Coldbreaker, Western boutiques quickly took notice, bringing the brand full circle back across Europe.

Coldbreaker Lifestyle Detail

The Living Guide: Sizing, Wind, and Lanolin

If you're thinking about adding a piece of Coldbreaker to your daily rotation, there are three practical realities you should know before buying:

1. Sizing and Layering: Coldbreaker still uses European industrial pattern blocks. Their flagship Pepitco Vest features a straight vertical profile with a high armscye (armhole) designed to seal in core heat. If you plan to wear it over a simple t-shirt or light button-up, stick to your normal size. If you want to throw it over a heavy 14oz loopwheel hoodie or a chunky Shetland sweater, size up one full size.

2. The Wind Factor: Natural wool pile operates via passive air trapping. Thousands of tiny, crimped wool fibers create air pockets that trap your body heat. However, because the backing is a breathable knit rather than a solid membrane, a heavy freezing wind will cut through it. In static cold, it’s exceptionally warm. In howling wind, pair it with an uninsulated windproof shell over the top. The shell seals in the trapped heat while the wool allows interior moisture to escape.

3. Washing (Read This Carefully): Never, under any circumstances, toss your Coldbreaker vest into a warm wash or a tumble dryer. Warm water and mechanical friction cause the microscopic scales on wool fibers to interlock permanently—a process known as felting. It will shrink your medium vest down to a size fit for a small terrier.
- Initial Scent: Fresh out of the bag, pure natural wool often carries a faint, earthy lanolin aroma. Do not panic or spray it with fabric freshener. Hang it outside in a shaded, well-ventilated spot for 48 hours and the scent will dissipate naturally.
- Cleaning: Spot clean minor spills. When a full wash is necessary, hand-wash in cold water (under 30°C) using a gentle, pH-neutral wool detergent. Press the water out gently with a dry towel—never wring it—and lay it completely flat to dry.

At a time when fashion is saturated with synthetic polyesters disguised as high-tech performance gear, Coldbreaker feels like a quiet, welcome reality check. It’s proof that a Polish couple buying a few circular knitting machines in 1999 could build something that outlives trends, cuts out microplastics, and keeps you warm using little more than natural sheep’s wool and clever engineering. It isn't fast fashion. It’s just good manufacturing that took a very interesting path to get to your closet. And as always, the coffee is freshly brewed in our Lund store!
