The Flat Head, hailing from Nagano, Japan, was founded in 1996 and has since established itself as one of the most legendary Japanese denim brands on the market. Founder Masayoshi Kobayashi was driven by a vision to fuse the free and cool American culture of the mid-century era with unmatched Japanese craftsmanship. The result is clothing that carries the American spirit but technically surpasses its predecessors through Japanese engineering.
At the time of purchase, The Flat Head considers its products only 50% complete. The philosophy is built on the idea that a garment reaches its full potential only through wear. As the natural materials—from the natural indigo to the copper rivets and cotton thread—age and mold to the wearer, a "One-of-a-Kind" product is created. The Flat Head is perhaps most famous for its unique vertical fading, known in Japanese as Doshaburi (downpour). This is achieved through an extremely deep rope-dye process where the core of the cotton thread remains white ("core white"). As the indigo wears away, white threads emerge in long, vertical streaks reminiscent of raindrops running down the fabric.
Creating the world's best T-shirt was one of Kobayashi's primary goals. By studying vintage shirts from the 1940s, he developed techniques that set the industry standard.
The Flat Head made exclusive leather jackets accessible to connoisseurs worldwide by introducing the concept of Teacore (Chashitsu). This involves dyeing the horsehide brown as a base and then black on the surface. As the jacket wears, the brown core emerges, providing a depth and character that mimics the most desirable vintage jackets from the 1950s.
Each jacket is treated with "fatliquoring," a process where the leather is saturated with Flat Head's proprietary oils to provide a soft yet substantial feel. Featuring Universal brass zippers and iron buckles, these jackets are built to be "worn to death" and passed down through generations.
The production of Flat Head jeans is unique for its decentralized method. Manufacturing takes place in several specialized factories, called "houses," around Kojima, Okayama. This allows each factory to be experts in its specific part of the process—from pattern development and cutting to final sewing.
Sewing is performed on meticulously maintained vintage machines from Mitsubishi and Union Special. These old machines create a natural tension and three-dimensional structure (puckering) in the seams that modern machines cannot replicate. It is a slow and demanding process, but it guarantees a level of precision and quality that permeates every stitch.
Masayoshi Kobayashi was born in 1959 in Nagano to a poor family. His first contact with manufacturing came out of necessity, as a child forced to modify his mother's sewing machine to repair holes in his sweatpants. This early experience of creating something out of nothing came to define his entire career.
After an eventful youth involving everything from running karaoke bars to dreaming of a racing career, he opened a vintage clothing store. Trips to the USA to buy vintage clothes became the turning point. He was inspired by 1950s American culture—the music, the cars, and James Dean’s rebellious style—but was disappointed by the declining quality in modern American production. He then decided to fuse American aesthetics with Japanese craftsmanship. In 1996, The Flat Head was born, named with a nod to the classic "flathead" engines, and the rest is denim history.
