Striped clothing dates back as far as to the medieval, being worn by prisoners in black and white. It also made its appearance during the French revolution, as a symbol of political upheaval. Meantime in America, stripes together with stars came to embody freedom, and appeared on the American Flag 1777, symbolizing the rights guaranteed by the constitution.
Later, Breton fishermen began wearing the classic striped sweater in white and blue. Arguing that the 21 stripes would make it easier finding the seamen falling overboard, and therefore in 1858 it became the official uniform of French sailors.
