Tomorrow, March 6th, is The Day of the Dude, a sacred holiday among followers of the laid-back philosophy inspired by The Big Lebowski. And there’s no better way to celebrate than by slipping into the legendary sweater worn by Jeff Bridges as Jeffrey “The Dude” Lebowski. Perhaps having a White Russian or two.

The Sweater That Abides

The Pendleton Westerly first appeared in 1974, when Pendleton Woolen Mills introduced a heavy wool cardigan in its Westernwear line. The design drew inspiration from traditional Pacific Northwest Cowichan sweaters. Thick, rugged knits built for cold weather and everyday wear. Machine-knit in Minnesota, the Westerley used a chunky wool gauge, a shawl collar, and a bold geometric pattern that made it feel more like outerwear than a simple sweater.

Then, for a while, it disappeared…

Fast forward to 1998, when Jeff Bridges showed up on screen wearing his own vintage Westerley while playing Jeffrey “The Dude” Lebowski in The Big Lebowski.

The fit was loose. The sweater looked lived-in. And it perfectly matched the Dude’s philosophy: take it easy.

The film became a cult classic. The sweater became iconic. Fans started hunting for the cardigan that “abides,” and eventually Pendleton brought the Westerley back—this time as one of the most recognizable sweaters in movie history.

Today it’s still made the same way: heavy wool, shawl collar, bold pattern. A 1970s design that somehow never stopped working.
