What now has become iconic in popular culture, and solidified in film history via Apocalypse Now, these river surfers gained fame through their pastime of surfing which was a means to escape the death and destruction of the war. What started out as a small outpost would grow into a full blown surfing club, even with surf boards being illegally smuggled in to the base.
