Tellason was founded in 2008 in the heart of San Francisco by two friends, Tony Patella and Pete Searson. The brand name itself is a portmanteau of their surnames (Patella-son). After years in the apparel industry, they grew tired of the fleeting nature of trend-based fashion. They decided to return to the roots of American style, founding Tellason on a simple, uncompromising premise: to make goods they would be proud to wear themselves, produced entirely in the city where blue jeans were born.
To understand Tellason, one must understand the history of San Francisco. During the Gold Rush, denim wasn’t a fashion statement; it was a tool. It was the rugged equipment worn by the miners, railroad workers, and pioneers who built the American West. By keeping their production in San Francisco, Tellason honors this legacy with pieces like the Coverall Jacket in International Orange, a garment that mirrors the functional utility of early American workwear.
For a decade, Tellason was a flagship partner for the legendary Cone Mills White Oak plant in North Carolina. When that historic American mill closed its doors in 2017, it marked the end of an era. However, for Tellason, it opened a prestigious new chapter with Kaihara Mills in Japan.
Today, Tellason works closely and exclusively with Kaihara for their selvedge denim. Kaihara is globally recognized as the gold standard of textile manufacturing, blending century-old vintage shuttle loom techniques with modern precision. This rope-dyed indigo denim is featured across their entire core line—from the heavy-duty 16.5 oz Coverall Jacket to their iconic denim pants. The result is a fabric with incredible structural integrity and a deep indigo saturation that produces the high-contrast "fades" that denim enthusiasts live for.
Tellason’s guiding principle is "Quality Comes First." They don't do seasons, they don't do "distressed" washes, and they don't do shortcuts. Every pair of jeans is a blank canvas. Whether you prefer the straight-leg Ankara, the straigh / tapered Sheffield, the slim-tapered Elgin, or the motorcycle-ready Blubaugh, you are starting with a garment that will become a personal record of your life.
By producing locally in San Francisco and Italy, Tellason ensures fair labor practices and a smaller carbon footprint. But their ultimate contribution to sustainability is longevity: a Tellason garment is built to last decades, not seasons.
