Fleurs de Bagne
Founded in 1852 1 under Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte , this penal colony was located on the cove of Chaton, not far from the point of Buzaré, in Cayenne , in Guyana. The penal colony was nicknamed the "dry guillotine" 7 : violence and punishments , malaria , and "depravity" were rife there. Of the 17,000 men sent to Cayenne between 1854 and 1867 , only 7,000 survived 8 . The convicts were employed either in public works (cleaning up marshes or maintaining port facilities, building roads) or in the service of individuals.
