Juniper Ridge is a tribute to the untamed beauty of the wilderness and the people who feel most alive within it. Founded in 1998 by Hall Newbegin, Juniper Ridge began with a bar of soap crafted in his own kitchen from the oils of real plants, lichens, and tree sap. With that single act, Hall found his purpose: capturing the pure, unfiltered scents of the wild and sharing them with the world.
From those early days at the Berkeley Farmers’ Market to becoming an internationally recognized voice in nature-based fragrance, Hall stayed true to one vision — to bottle the wilderness in its rawest, most authentic form. Juniper Ridge’s products are still handcrafted today in Oakland, California, using sustainably harvested plants and time-honored steam distillation techniques. No synthetic perfumes. No parabens, phthalates, or dyes. Just nature, respectfully collected and lovingly crafted.
Each product is an aromatic study of real landscapes: the sun-drenched Mojave desert, the towering redwoods of the Pacific Coast, the crisp alpine air of the High Sierra. These aren’t mere scents — they’re memories of places where Hall and the Juniper Ridge team camped under stars, played ukulele around campfires, and passed whiskey among friends. They are living echoes of Hall’s passion, and of the deep reverence he had for the natural world.
Juniper Ridge’s team of thirteen, still based in Oakland, carefully handcrafts each item with a commitment to environmental stewardship. They use upcycled plants removed through forest fire mitigation, biodegradable formulas, and packaging made with SFI-certified paper. All products are cruelty-free and made without synthetic additives, because the goal isn’t just to smell good — it’s to feel connected.
When Hall passed away in 2020 after his battle with Frontotemporal Degeneration, he left behind more than a company — he left a movement. His joy for nature, music, and memory lives on in every bottle. Today, Juniper Ridge continues to carry his torch, inviting us all to bring the outdoors in, and to live a little more wildly, every day.
