Heard through the mists of time (and the extensive crackling of the ancient master acetates from which they were taken), these collected mid-'50s radio performances from LOUISIANA HAYRIDE provide a unique opportunity to witness Elvis Presley's evolution from nervous, raw, untutored talent to embryonic rock & roll superstar. Several versions of his early hits, including "Blue Moon of Kentucky" and "That's All Right Mama," are featured--the latter in particular undergoes an audible improvement in the three months between the different takes presented here.
In addition, there to a couple of rare versions of "Tweedle Dee" and a twangin' rendition of "I Don't Care If the Sun Don't Shine." The early cuts are the most revelatory, with an audibly nervous Presley exchanging pleasantries with the announcer after a cigarette commercial and then launching into "That's All Right Mama" to a somewhat stilted reception. All that changes within the space of two short years, of course, and by the time he's performing a brashly confident "Hound Dog" in 1956, complete with fake stuttering intro, the music is drowning in a sea of adolescent screams. THE ELVIS BROADCASTS: ON AIR provides a fascinating glimpse into the formative years of a rock & roll legend.
