One of the most important cultural figures of the Twentieth century, Alfred Hitchcock’s masterful body of work remains as striking and individual today as it ever did. The Londoner who conquered Hollywood with his love of suspense and his dry sense of humour was often pushing the limits of film technology to produce his extraordinary productions. His obsessive focus on every detail of his films and television shows of course included the underlying music, and resulted in some of the most memorable and evocative soundtracks ever written.
This collection includes the striking and unsettling music from masterpieces such as ‘Vertigo’, ‘North By Northwest’, ‘Psycho’, ‘Rear Window’ and ‘Rope’. A number of these pieces were written by Bernard Herrmann, whose name is most often associated with Hitchcock as his regular collaborator for a decade from the mid-1950s to the mid-1960s. Prior to this period, Hitchcock worked with Franz Waxman and Dimitri Tiomkin in particular, both of whose work is also represented in this collection.
Also included are selections from the man’s ‘Music To Be Murdered By’ album – a droll collection of hair-raising tunes with Hitchcock providing introductions for each in his inimitable manner – as well as some pearls of wisdom from the man himself.
All in all, 23 tracks of spine-tingling music that transport the listener into the work of one of the true greats of cinema.
